Upgrading the electrical panel in your home.
Replacing or upgrading your electrical panel can be costly, but it is more than worth it when it comes to the safety of your family. The cost to upgrade or change a panel widely varies depending on a multitude of factors:
Does the size of the main breaker need to be increased?
Does the panel or meter have to be moved to accommodate current codes?
How many existing circuits are in your panel?
These are some of the considerations that factor into generating an accurate quote.
How do I know if my panel needs to be replaced or upgraded?
Safety Hazard
If your breaker is hot to touch or producing a burning smell, this is both a serious fire hazard, and a warning to call an electrician immediately. Panel upgrades and replacements are also required when there is a greater demand for power due to new electrical loads added to the home (electric water heater, hot tub, air conditioning, or any other large appliances).
Insufficient Room on Panel
Another reason for upgrading your panel would be an insufficient amount of breaker spaces available. You may want to add a circuit to your home only to find there is no more space for additional breakers.
Panel Expiration
Finally, the life expectancy of your panel may have expired and it’s only a matter of time before something begins to go wrong. The average life expectancy of a panel is roughly 30-40 years of safe operation. It may last much longer, but why take the chance if safety becomes a concern? One of the leading causes of structure fires is caused by outdated or improperly installed electrical equipment.
